About Signpost 6: A String of Theories

Ideas about conflict and duality lead to investigation into my values and beliefs and those of others and how these differences in belief systems, religious traditions and ideologies can create conflict in the world.

Whilst looking at the writings of some spiritual teachers and thinkers, I came across a piece of writing by Hazrat Inayat Khan, the founder and teacher of Universal Sufism. His writings from the book Cosmic Language about ‘three ways of perception’ relating to thought, feeling, spiritual language and intuition struck a chord with me and were the starting point and inspiration for my upcoming exhibition ‘Signpost 6: A String of Theories’ and two large paintings; Untitled 1 and 2 which express ideas relating to the heart; the opening of the heart, increased self-awareness, compassion combined with knowledge, understanding and tolerance.

I discovered Khans focus was on what these religious traditions and beliefs held in common, respecting and celebrating the diversity of different paths which ultimately shared the same goal; moving closer to that which one seeks; be it unity, oneness, God etc. His teachings were aimed at unifying the East and West.
